Granny’s Hamburger BBQ
Saucy and tangy, this recipe will warm and satisfy! Have dinner ready in 3 steps and 25 minutes.
This is another beloved recipe from my Granny that I remember eating as a child. My mom grew up in a farming area and her father and grandfather had beef cattle, so there was always beef in the freezer. Ground beef was a “cheap” option in that scenario, so this was a quick and inexpensive meal for them.
I remember eating hamburger BBQ on yard sale days, after a long morning of sitting in the brisk spring or fall air. Granny would have this warming in the crock pot, and the smell would permeate the kitchen.
While this is similar to what some might call a “Sloppy Joe”, I always thought of it as hamburger BBQ. Then I married someone who was steeped in south Texas BBQ culture and tradition… the “hamburger BBQ” name still confounds him, but he loves the sandwich!
Let’s Make It!
Brown 1 pound of hamburger in a skillet or medium saucepan. Drain all or most of the grease before adding a diced onion. Cook until the onion is translucent, then add everything else. Simmer 20 minutes and enjoy!
Storage
This freezes well and is a great item to have on hand for a quick and satisfying dinner. I try to portion out one meal’s worth in a plastic container (make sure it seals well). Be sure to label with name and date, and try to use within several months.
