Saucy Chex Mix
A saucier, salty-sweet snack inspired by the original Chex Mix recipe.
When Chex mix is baking in my oven, it takes me back to Christmas. There are many store-bought foods that we only ever made at home when I was growing up. Chex mix was one of them, and for whatever reason it was a holiday-time treat. My Granny and mother would make slightly different variations, and over time I developed my own spin as well.
What You Need
- Unsalted butter (there is plenty of salt in the recipe)
- Seasonings (seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder)
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cereals and snacks of choice (see below)
Let’s Make It
Melt the butter in a small sauce pan and whisk in the other sauce ingredients.
Measure out the cereals/snacks into the biggest mixing bowl you can find. Part of the memory and tradition for me is a gigantic metal mixing bowl that was used for delicious holiday treats like Chex mix and caramel corn.
Pour the sauce over and stir REALLY well. You want as even of a coating as possible — there is nothing more sad than getting mostly dry cereal in your snack bowl.
Pour onto a cookie sheet, spread out, bake.
This is an EXCELLENT recipe to make with your kids/toddlers! My 4-year-old loves helping me measure and stir the cereals, as well as tasting throughout the process 🙂
Variations
My Granny added bagel chips and sesame sticks to her blend, as well as peanuts (she put nuts in everything!). My mom adds peanuts and Golden Graham cereal. As long as the amount of dry cereals/snacks remains the same, toss in your favorites!
Storage
Chex mix keeps well on the counter for up to a week, but stays fresher (for a few weeks) in the fridge, and several months in the freezer. I prefer gallon Ziplocks or well-sealed tupperware.
Golden Grahams and Honey Nut Chex or Cheerios work well. Anything like Cinnamon Toast Crunch that has a powder on the outside will not work as well. The powdery cinnamon ends up dispersing throughout the whole blend.
As long as you maintain approximately 10-11 cups of “snacky things”, it doesn’t really matter what you use. I’ve made “odds and ends” chex mix, where I used up what we had: chex, cheerios, golden grahams, pretzel goldfish, sesame sticks, teddy grahams, life cereal, etc.
